The Circle of Life
Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, formed the Circle of Mothers. The organization was created for mothers across the country who have lost a child or family member to gun violence. The Circle helps mothers grieve and cope with loss, encourages them to develop strategies to prevent violent deaths nationwide, and empowers them to be agents of change. Being a mother in the circle means you’ve lost someone who meant everything. It is the club that no one asks to join. It is the circle of life.
This election season two of the mothers have channeled their grief to make change on the national stage and the local level. Lucy McBath, mother of Jordan Davis, won the democratic primary in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District. If McBath wins in November she’ll be headed to DC. Lezley McSpadden, mother of Mike Brown, announced her candidacy for the 2019 Ferguson, MO City Council Race just two days ago. Fighting back tears McSpadden said “I ran down this very street and my son was covered in a sheet.” Nearly four years to the date of her son’s tragic death, she’s running for office.
“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who had ever been alive.” James Baldwin
November 2018 Update: Lucy McBath won her house race and will represent the historically Republican 6th Congressional District for Georgia beginning in 2019!
