The Anatomy of Queen & Slim
Queen & Slim is the artistically brilliant, heartbreakingly honest film that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s the kind of movie that makes you reevaluate how you view strangers as you navigate through life.
Lena Waithe and Melina Matsoukas crafted a story where a simple failure to signal leads to a chain reaction where five unrelated individuals lose their lives.
Queen & Slim is layered with racism, grief, skepticism, trust, loyalty, and legacy. The movie reveals a black couple fleeing law enforcement after shooting a crooked cop in self defense, a white couple compelled to do the right thing, a black teenager angry at the world for its failure to protect us, and a grilled-up dude from Florida who would sell his own mama down the river if the price was right.
By the end of the movie we are all rooting for the great escape. If “Get Out” is a vivid dream, “Queen & Slim” is a beautiful nightmare. Shout out to Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith for one of the sexiest love scenes in modern history. In a time where it’s amazing that black people even leave the house, we were glad to witness a film so UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK & PROUD! ✊🏾
