Queen Of The South
Just when you thought Beyoncé couldn’t get any bigger or blacker she hit us with a whole album inside of the new Lion King Soundtrack. “The Lion King: The Gift” executive produced by Mrs. Carter includes 14 tracks featuring Childish Gambino, Wale, Kendrick Lamar, newcomer Tierra Whack and even a cameo by heir to the throne Blue Ivy Carter. Of the 14 songs Beyoncé appears on 10. There we were bracing ourselves for new music during #virgoseason but September came early like a one minute man.
While diehard members of the beyhive hold their collective breath ahead of the album release we are waiting to exhale as one of our favorite movies of all time (The Lion King) gets a software update with a star studded cast and a whole ass Beyoncé project on the side. The Gift infuses R&B, Pop, Rap, Hiphop and Afrobeats in a way that evokes Black Pride spanning the diaspora.
In a time where we are told to go back where we came from love projects like “The Gift” are a safe place to land in an environment of chaos. Through it all we must remember our worth even when those around us are determined to break us.
Beyoncé is the gift that keeps on giving from “Lemonade” to “Everything is Love” to the “Homecoming” documentary that made us all want to enroll in HBCU’s and now “The Gift”. A little girl from Houston who attended pageants, and practiced her craft for hours when no one cared enough to learn her name, would rise to fame as a teenager with the girl group powerhouse “Destiny’s Child”. Later she would embark on a solo career that was initially more lucrative for people pulling the strings behind the scenes. When Bey dropped her self titled album in 2013 in the middle of the night, without a traditional rollout, and broke the internet she changed the game. With every project she manages to ascend to higher heights. Beyoncé emerged as a shooting star and somehow transformed into a “Queen of the South”.
